Biography

Howard 'Hal' Carter was born in the breast of wealth and knows no other life. The second of three siblings, he never had a chance to indulge in the so-called middle-child syndrome. His life was one of privilege and attention from his first day. Of course the attention oftentimes came from nannies and other employed personnel.

As the story goes, his parents were very involved in their high society duties. His father, the head of the Carter estate, held important business titles in managing the family business conglomerate, whose history extended far back centuries. His mother, a socialite, was a force to be reckoned with and the iron fist of their household.

As he grew up, Hal quickly grasped the way of things in his social circle. There were no abandonment issues, no rebellion over his parents' attention being directed elsewhere from the upbringing of their children. His parents loved their children in the best way they knew how. Children were a symbol of status, a financial investment and a coin of trade. None of that meant there lacked love in the Carter household. They simply did not fall for the sentimentality displayed by peers in other social circles.

The three Carter siblings were groomed to be worthy of the estate they'd inherit. Highly educated and trained in a variety of skills, they each took to their strengths. Hal was always a bright child, a quick study in everything he proposed to do. From languages to sports, there was always something new in which to excel. Though he dabbled in everything, it was his curiosity that stood out in every endeavor.

It was not uncommon for the child to tear apart toys he received. Rather than destroy them, Hal craved to learn how they worked. Before long, the toys were reassembled, custom modifications and even improvements made to their base design. It was this curiosity, coupled with an entrepreneurial spirit, that won him titles in every Science Fair and competition throughout his school years. Once college applications rolled around, Hal had a slew of choices to pick from. Though many would point out his privilege as an entrance card to the Ivy League schools, Hal preferred to be less cynical about it.

Picking a major involved a lot of angst and a few dry runs. Hal was interested in everything. Narrowing it down was almost offensive. Eventually, under pressure to start his adult life beyond college, he settled on an Archeology major, with an Engineering minor. It could be seen by some as a self-serving choice to cater to his love of exploring ancient cultures and the more modern interest of robots and innovation. But beyond fun, it was also a business decision. Hal was set to take over, along with his brother, the Marine Exploration and Artifacts trade branch of the family business.

While his older brother took to the managerial end of business, Hal was the on-site man. Diploma in hand, he packed up a suitcase and took off to inspect the on-going projects of the company. Eventually, he was able to not only manage current projects, but also prospect new endeavors. This was Hal's favorite part of the job, as it meant literally going where no man had ever been. Whether deep in the sea, at an excavation site in Mexico or high on top of Mount Everest, there was always treasure to be found.

Current

No matter where his travels took him, Hal invariably ended up back in his hometown of Boston, MA. It was there that he met and married Isla Castiel. A whirlwind romance with nuances of fate, they were married within the year. Soon after, she fell pregnant with their first child. Shock turned into excitement as Hal adjusted to the new role of "father". Little did he know the position would be vacant much too soon.

In May 2015, they had a miscarriage and lost the baby. The loss ran deep and rocked what stability there was to their marriage. Sinking in a sea of grief and unattended feelings, their separation came not long after. Apart since July, the divorce papers were filed and signed in September of that same year.

Unaccustomed to failure and heartbroken, Hal left Boston a month after the divorce. Leaving their family home to Isla, he decided to sink as low as he felt. Rather than rent or buy a new home, he sent a clear message to the universe: he was throwing in the towel. Throwing in the towel looked a lot like browsing Craigslist for new roommates. By chance, he found an open room in a well-preserved browstone. It was then that he met Lily West and Shayla Saunders, his current roommates.

Though he moved in all of his belongings back in October, his travels kept him out of Boston until late January. Back in town, with a half-mended heart, Hal is focused on building the bridges that fell apart with his absence, as well as getting more involved with the administrative side of business, as pressure from his father mounts anually.

Hawkman • "Carter Hall"

Originally Prince Khufu of ancient Egypt, the hero who would become known as Hawkman discovered an alien spacecraft from the planet Thanagar, powered by a mysterious anti-gravity element called Nth Metal. The unearthly energies of the metal transformed his soul, and he and his love Princess Chay-Ara were reincarnated over and over for centuries. Currently he is Carter Hall, archaeologist and adventurer. MORE @ DC WIKI

Powers

  • Blessing: Carter Hall was a priest in a past life, and still possesses the ability to bless mundane objects. For example, by muttering a prayer in front of a building's sprinkler system, he was once able to convert the water into Holy Water in order to destroy a vampire.
  • Divine Empowerment: Hawkman was granted the ability to breathe underwater, by the god Poseidon.
  • Reincarnation: The Nth metal knife which murdered Hawkman in his original incarnation as Khufu had an unusual effect upon his soul and that of his lover Chay-Ara (Hawkgirl). The pair are locked in a seemingly endless cycle of death and rebirth throughout the centuries. While not a superhuman power per se, this propensity for reincarnation has allowed Hawkman to cheat death and return to active duty in his current incarnation.

Abilities

  • Weaponry: Due to his multiple incarnations and having memories of all of his past lives, Khufu/Hall has become proficient in many types of weaponry. As a result, he is an expert with a wide array of archaic weapons from his past lives, including battle axes, maces, swords, spears and shields. As Nighthawk, he was a marksman with a pistol. In addition, Carter Hall is sometimes depicted handling futuristic technology. He has used a Thanagarian ship called "The Brontadon", and during the Rann-Thanagar War used Rannian hard-light armor. Hawkman is even depicted using technologically advanced laser weaponry in a possible future.
  • Reincarnated Knowledge: Due to his many lives and vast amount of experience, Hall is a brilliant tactician, fierce warrior, and strong leader. At the same time, however, he is extremely intelligent (considered a leader in his field of history and archaeology) and expresses a deeply romantic side in relation to his beloved soul-mate. Often, Carter finds it difficult to balance between the "barbarian" of his past lives and the "gentleman" of his current incarnation. He also has an extremely innovative approach to science and technology.
  • Science
    • In the summer of 1942, Hawkman invented a method to store complete meals in tiny capsules. The meals then expanded to full size, when a special solution was applied. This technology was used by the Justice Society on a famine-relief mission to Europe, during WWII.
    • In the late 1940s, Hawkman invented a bubble-shaped antigravity flying vehicle. Little if any use was made of this vehicle afterward, and it was not commercialized or mass-produced.
    • Early in his career, Hawkman encountered and defeated another inventor working with antigravity technology, and confiscated one of his gravity-inducing weapons, for future study.

Weaknesses

  • Curse: Every time he is born again he must wander the earth till he meets again with his eternal soul mate. But as soon as they form a deep bond, they are destined to be murdered again and it continues.

Paraphernalia

Equipment

  • Nth Metal Enhancement: The metal is psycho-reactive, responding to its bearer's thoughts and in its base form has a number of electromagnetic/gravitational properties. Among these is the ability to generate a heat aura, sufficient to keep a man alive under Arctic conditions.
  • Nth Metal-induced Enhanced Strength: Carter's strength level is increased by the Nth metal. Carter is capable of ripping a car door of its hinges with little effort.
  • Nth metal-induced Enhanced Durability: Hawkman is able to withstand blows from superhuman opponents as powerful as Black Adam.
  • Enhanced Vision: Hawkman can observe objects at great distances or at speeds faster than can be perceived by the normal eye. He once spotted Flash vibrating through a wall before he was visible. He can also count the flapping of a hummingbird's wings.
  • Accelerated Healing
  • Self-Sustenance

Transportation

  • Artificial Feathered Wings: His wings, which are laced with Nth metal, allow him to control navigation and guidance during flight, though they can be "flapped" through use of shoulder motions. He can reach an airspeed of 225 miles per hour, if not better.
  • Antigravity Flying Vehicle: He invented a flying machine, but made little if any use of it afterward.

Weapons

  • Archaic Weaponry: Hawkman has access to an entire arsenal of medieval weaponry. His favored weapons are the mace and flail.
